Physical testing of designs to ‘remain essential for the foreseeable future’, says Honda

Michael Nash talks to Honda’s Craig Kline about its new wind tunnel facility and the future of physical and simulated tests during vehicle design

As they evolve and become increasingly advanced, simulation tools are playing an ever-more prominent role in vehicle design. Engineering teams are now able to use computer software tools to refine numerous aspects of design, from aerodynamics to engine noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), and even dirt accumulation.

As well as aiding in the characteristics of design, simulation tools can also help OEMs save time and money by reducing the amount of prototyping needed and allowing them to continuously carry out tests with flexibility. With all these added benefits, the future of physical tests during the design phase of vehicles looks uncertain.
