Los Angeles gambles with on-demand microtransit

LA Metro hopes on-demand microtransit can optimise fixed routes and transit connections in underserved communities. By Jack Hunsley

Los Angeles is a city ripe for transit innovation. According to pre-pandemic research from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, the average LA commuter could expect to spend an estimated 119 hours per year stuck in traffic. By this metric, LA ranks as the most gridlocked city in the US. With this context, it is no surprise that the city’s transportation authority, commonly branded as LA Metro, is eagerly considering new mobility services and models.
